Project experience:

Establishing a Social Licence to Operate Amidst Complexity: Issues and Opportunities for Canadian Mining Sector Governance

Lead researcher on a project exploring the governance dimensions of the social licence to operate (SLO) and the obstacles and opportunities associated with its effective implementation in the Canadian mining sector. Governance is being evaluated by focusing on determinants of SLO outcomes; more specifically, the research is assessing actual and potential governance arrangements that enable the establishment of a resilient SLO in the mining sector. Involved in the design, preparation and execution of the research.

Scoping of Environmental Regulations for Hydropower Development in Vietnam

Preparation of an overview of environmental legislation relevant to hydropower development in Vietnam. This included a review of environmental assessment regulations, land tenure process, natural resource tax law, indigenous considerations, and government incentive programs.

Review of Existing Environmental Data for Hydropower Development
in a Northern Ontario Watershed

Preliminary scoping of sustainability issues for potential hydropower development in northern Ontario. This included a review of relevant environmental legislation, past development projects in the region, Aboriginal and traditional land use considerations, likely environmental concerns (e.g. species at risk, protected areas), and socio-economic considerations.

Assessing the Effectiveness of Impact and Benefit Agreements in the Canadian North

Project design, implementation and results analysis for a research study on the effectiveness of Impact and Benefit Agreements (IBAs) in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Tasks included conducting interviews and focus groups with regulators, mining project proponents and Aboriginal community representatives over a two year period. Two three-month field seasons were spent in the communities of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and Kugluktuk, Nunavut.

Screening Assessment of Potential Hydropower Opportunities in Ontario

Review of relevant environmental legislation, taxes and fees, permitting and regulatory requirements, Aboriginal considerations, and site tenure considerations for potential hydropower developments in Ontario.

Review of Changes to the ISO 14001 and Responsible Care Standards

Preparation of a report outlining proposed changes to the ISO 14001 and Responsible Care standards, which also described implications for the client’s corporate environmental and quality management systems.
